Wheels of Gold…

Welcome to the #MondayMonthlyInterview when on the 1st Monday of each month, I interview someone doing interesting stuff with their life.

Like me I’m sure you’re glued to the Paralympics & glad to fill the post-Olympics void with more sporting excellence & incredible stories.

Today I’m honoured to welcome 2 times Gold Olympian Ed Clancy MBE, fresh from winning Gold & Bronze for Team GB in the Olympics…

Ed won gold in cycling’s team pursuit & bronze in the omnium. He also won gold in Beijing bringing his gold tally to two! I was lucky enough to work with Ed in my previous (work) life & I’m delighted he’s agreed to be this month’s interviewee…

  1. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? “I always liked bikes but never thought I’d make a living out of riding them. Engineering is what I was going to do after school.”
  2. What makes you get up in the morning/inspires you? “Not so much the winning or losing, just my love of riding bikes is enough inspiration for me.”
  3. If you won the EuroMillions, what would you do? “I’d buy a big house, a fast car, and then save the rest for friends and family and the future.”
  4. Who would your fantasy 5 dinner party guests be? My 3 pursuit teammates, Johnny Vaughan (for his enthusiasm & humour) & Carol Vorderman (for her brains & glamour!).”
  5. If you were stranded on a desert island, what 5 items would you wish you had? “Phone, suncream, shades, guitar and a motocross bike (be great on a desert island!)”
  6. Where do you keep your medals? “They’re always moving around. Under my bed at the moment.”
  7. How did you celebrate your Olympic achievements? “A few nights out with my teammates. Also just catching up with friends and family was nice.”
  8. Other than your wins, what were your Olympic highlights? “Just the feel good factor that seems to have hit GB since the games.”
  9. Do you have any superstitions or rituals before you race? “None, in fact sometimes I’ll wind up teammates with talk of punctures and crashes before we race!”
  10. If you had to choose another Olympic sport other than cycling, what would it be and why? “I’d like to try Canoe Slalom, just because it looks like such awesome fun!”

And finally… what’s next for you? “I don’t know…. is the short answer. I want to go to Rio for sure, just a question of what events to target there and how best to get there. Could potentially concentrate solely on the road for the next few years, or solely on the track or a mix or the two. First things first, I want to have a break and enjoy the other things in life for at least a month or two!”

Thanks so much to Ed for taking part in today’s #MondayMonthlyInterview. What a lovely guy and so deserving of all that he’s achieved so far. I wish him all the very best for whatever challenge he sets himself next and look forward to seeing him spin the wheels of gold in Rio 2016. G x
